The Solar System Booklet

My idea is ‘The Solar System’ for the booklet.

I have made my own planets with different textures and techniques to make them look like real planets in Photoshop.

These are the Photoshop tools that I used to make The Solar System,  Outer Glow, Cloud, Level, Brightness / Contrast and Elliptical Marquee Tool. I created every single planet using these tools. I was not sure how to make these but with a little research and experiment I was able to design and create the planets.

I made this image linking all the planets to create one big planet. The text is a from a speech given by Kalpana Chawla, the first Indian American astronaut.

I got feedback about this booklet and was told that I needed to add some statistics about planets for example, temperature, distance from earth and diameter. The font needed to be lighter. Gaps to the edge of pages needed to be equal. All the pages needed clearer borders by not putting text and images too close to the borders.Screen Shot 2015-01-11 at 17.18.32

loPoly images in Illustrator

I am going to make loPoly images in illustrator. I have never used illustrator before so this was going to be quite an experience!

This is the original image.

Screen Shot 2014-12-30 at 16.29.07

This was my first attempt to produce the image and took some time to get it this far. I knew this was not a very good production and there was plenty of room for improvement. The shapes did not connect correctly and the colouring was all wrong.

Me Improvement 2

This was my second attempt and definitely an improvement. I learnt from the mistakes on the first try and think this is much better and more of a balanced illustration.

AVE Poster

We had to create a poster about audio visual experimentation for an exhibition being held in Talin, Estonia.

I created this poster in photoshop. I chose this design from a google image but was not to keen on the final look.

Screen Shot 2014-11-21 at 12.32.10

I kept in mind that the exhibition would be about the visuals linked to some kind of audio and wanted a design that would reflect gracefulness.

After much debate I decided to go ahead with the dance of the Indian peacock and use the peacocks tail in my design. The peacock is famous for dancing gracefully and the colours are bright and standout and can be seen from afar.

Initially I had the logo in the colours of the peacock and was going to go with darker shades for the tail. Once I started the design I felt that using similar colours was going to look to fussy.

Screen Shot 2014-11-21 at 12.32.51

I finally opted to keep the tail in the traditional colours and stretched it to the length of the poster.

Screen Shot 2014-11-21 at 12.33.07

The exhibition was going to be sponsored by the art museum of Estonia so I decided to keep the same colours for my logo as that of the museum. I felt that any extra design or colours would detract from the simplicity of the poster.

Screen Shot 2014-11-21 at 12.33.51

This is the screenshot of the image I chose the colours from for the peacocks tail.

Here is my final poster. I think it is easy to understand and is visually eye catching.

AVE Poster Final

After getting feedback I improved the poster to get a more modern and cutting edge feel.

Screen Shot 2014-11-28 at 19.44.32

I used the image of the building of the museum as the backdrop and used a cut out image with the exhibition info to create a new poster.

I prefer this poster because it is more contemporary looking.

Pixel Based Imaging – week 7: Eye

In Photoshop, I created the eye into spooky eye in Photoshop.

_blood shot eye _Eye_no_makeup_

Here are the original eyes given to us that will be merged together in Photoshop to create a funky zombie eye.

Screen Shot 2014-11-07 at 21.28.39 Screen Shot 2014-11-07 at 21.28.43

This is how I created the zombie  eye.  I  experimented to create the type of eye I wanted in photoshop. The tools I used  were mask, layer, brush, hue/saturation, black & white.

Taa-daa, Here is the official zombie eye.  I thought I did a good job but I would like to make more variations on the eyes.

As it was halloween I thought I would create horror posters for a new film using this eye as the main focus .

Screen Shot 2014-11-07 at 21.55.14 Screen Shot 2014-11-07 at 21.55.37

This shows how I made the design of the poster in Photoshop. I have added the eye, name of film ‘Believe in the Eye’, black background, credits, imax 3d logo, dolby digital logo, coming soon, and restricted sign.

Eye Poster

Here is the final Horror poster.

I decided to go all the way and created a billboard.

Taa-daa, Here are 3 billboards with my horror poster on them.

I feel more confident now and more creative using photoshop.

I got feedback about the zombie eye and though it was mostly positive it was pointed out that the pupil had to many hard lines and did not look natural. The colours also looked jarring and it needed to be more professionally finished.

eye (improved)

I corrected the eye by softening the colours and tidying the lines.

I updated the improved the zombie eye into the poster and billboards.

Composite image masking and channel techniques

This was a task to place two very different images together one on top of the other to make them appear as if they belonged together.

This was done using the magic box of tricks in photoshop. Using the mask tool you can hide parts of a layer of an image, delete the finer details, tidy up the edges and after adjusting the brightness and contrast the final image appears as if it was always meant to appear this way; and the really cool thing is that anything you do with a layer mask is not permanent so you can be as flexible as you like.

I struggled with this technique initially but the more I practiced trying to work the mask I finally managed to layer my caution sign on the brick wall.

Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 14.55.01 Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 14.55.12 Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 14.55.16 Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 14.56.28   Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 14.57.01Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 19.26.52Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 14.57.26  Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 14.57.17 Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 14.58.31Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 14.58.42 Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 14.57.09

The next step in this process was to place this indian head dress on  a motorway. This required more patience and technique because of the finer details of the head dress e.g. the feathers and attachments. Managed to do this quite well in the end because of the previous practice with the caution sign. The imagination does run wild at the possibilities of using these techniques on different images and backgrounds.

Saving images in Photoshop for different uses

  • Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 14.48.15 Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 14.48.27 Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 14.48.47 Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 14.49.01 Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 14.49.15 Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 14.50.01There are different ways of saving your images in photoshop. For example:
  • Gif (graphics interchange format)-compressed files with a small colour range so not good to save high quality photos using this.
  • JPEG (joint photographic experts group)-can be compressed and retains all colour information though image can be of high or low quality depending on compression.
  • PSD (photoshop)-to save edited files and data on single page files.
  • PSE (photo creations format)-to save edited files and data on multiple page files.
  • Photoshop PDF (portable document format)-accurately displays images after saving.
  • PNG (portable network graphics)-files can  be compressed more than GIF and do not lose any quality.
  • TIFF (tagged image file format)-can store large high quality images.

I use JPEG the most because I feel it saves and preserves my files to the best quality.

Me as a champion Liverpool player on Photoshop

I experimented with Photoshop and decided to turn myself into Liverpool’s football clubs next champion player. (childhood dream)

My faceSteven-Gerrard-Liverpool-FC

I chose two images, myself and my favourite player Steven Gerrard with the Champion League trophy. I used the magic tool to do this trick.  Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 13.41.26 Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 13.42.55

You can see the magic wand working on both heads to remove them and then copy my head onto steven gerrards image.

These are the photoshop tools I used.

This is my final image. I feel quite confident using photoshop and with more experience will be able to make the images more accurate and look like they are the original image.

Photo-Montage – collage image

During the  lesson, we looked at Photo-Montages and combining pictures past and present to tell a story.  I liked the Tony Blair selfie with  the explosive background showing his involvement in Iraq war. I thought he was funny but disrespectful.

I went to the library to get books with black & white and colour photos. Scanned pictures to make future/past images. I created a photo montage using photoshop tools.

My Photo-Montage

Draft Photo-Montage

future past with volcanoe background

This is my first idea. There is a volcano in the background and the a photo of a man taken in black and white. The story behind the montage was that this might be his last cigarette. He cannot be bothered and does not know whether he’s going to live or die. My first idea is not good enough because just the man and volcano mean nothing and somehow this was not working for me. It also didn’t show much skill on my part.

2nd Draft Photo-Montage

future past 1

This is my second idea of Photo-Montage and I have added a dog. The man is the same as the picture before and the dog is there to help him get away. I don’t like this picture because you cannot tell it is a dog. The photo of the dog looks like a cleaning brush and I didn’t think this man was in any mood to clean up the volcanic lava!

Final Photo-Montage

cold place

This is another attempt of my photo-montage. The image is about war. Shows this black & white man ( might be the enemy) just standing and smoking acting like he can’t be bothered and is not afraid about anything especially whether or not he will be attacked by soliders or the soldier jumping out from plane. The lone man just wants his last smoke before he might die and the soldiers are celebrating that they have got their man. I chose the winter scene as many wars are won and lost during the coldest months and shows the strength of those fighting in worst conditions. Also the colours give the montage a nice contrast.

I scanned these pictures from different books.

  • Advanced black and white photography
  • The worlds top photographers -Landscape (Terry Hope)
  • The nature of the photographs ( Stepen Sure)
  • Behind the view (Elizabeth Handy)
  • Digital Arts (Christiane Paul)

My feedback was that the final image is a bit busy  so I had to improve it.

Improvement 2

I have changed it with no soldiers.

Changed background but still looks wrong because it does not make any sense.

Changed background but images still do not make sense because it’s not connected.

  Final Photo-Montage

I have changed the background and added a  car and old lady and now I think  the image connects.  This photo-montage  shows  the black and white image of a man standing up having his last smoke and another man coming to attack him. The lady has  stopped the car and is looking at the two men and wondering what is going on.

I preferred this image out of all the others and thought it gave the viewer a more cohesive narrative.

Took many attempts but finally got there! Using the tools was easy enough but just creating an idea became a little confusing.

Vector Style illustration

Used photoshop today which is all about layers. Layers are great because they give you flexibility to add different colours and images on top of each other and lets you change things and hide areas not wanted.

Used loads of tools in photoshop:

  • magic wand
  • polygonal lasso
  • paint bucket
  • paint brush

Some of the steps in the layering process. Took about 32 layers and nearly 2 hours to get to the final image.

Given a photo and had to animate it.George_B       face

Took some time to get from A to B but not bad for a first attempt! at least i think so…… I have used photoshop before but that was almost two years ago so had to rack my brain to remember some of the tricks of the trade. Technically can manage the tools really well but need to get more creative.

I really enjoyed it. I feel I could improve to give my image more character and maybe a new personality by adding more features e.g. glasses, a cap, freckles or maybe a stubble.
